Leaders must be protected, a leader’s plea
A Member of Parliament (MP) of the ruling Democratic Coalition for Change Government was threatened over the weekend by thugs at the Gilbert Camp area, East Honiara.
The MP who does not want to be identified, was traveling with his family to attend Church on Sunday.
The alleged incident has forced the leader to call on community leaders and police in Honiara to ensure leaders, women and children are protected from being harmed by criminals.
The MP in his plea on Monday came claimed the youths threatened him and members of his family as they were travelling to attend Church Sunday morning of September 11 at Gilbert Camp.
He said the criminals punched his car a number of times and were very abusive.
The Government MP said the police, church leaders and traditional chiefs in communities in the national capital should educate their young delinquents to respect people especially leaders, the elderlies, children and women.
He has been told women have been victims of the young criminals in the area.
The MP said, as the spot where the criminals operate from is well known to residents of Kobito, Border, Naha, Greenvale and Gilbert Camp, he cannot see the reason why community leaders in and around the area and the police cannot stop the unlawful activities by the delinquents.
Meanwhile, the DCCG MP said the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) should rebuild the Borderline Police Post that was torched a number of years ago or build a new one at Gilbert Camp.
He said it is absolutely necessary to have the Police Post to look after the neighboring housing estates because of their increasing populations, coupled with the illegal production and consumption of kwaso and marijuana.
The Honorable said it is obvious the increasing lawlessness in the Gilbert Camp Housing Estate can be attributed to the everincreasing illegal use of marijuana and kwaso.
The Borderline area is also a hot spot for theft where women and young girls fell victims to mobile phone theft at the bus top area during the evenings.
Also female market vendors at the area felt unsafe given the rising number of drunkard youths roaming around the place causing disturbances.
