PARENTS and teachers play an important role in the educational journey of students, which can lead to success in their lives.
That’s the message highlighted by the Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) for Wagina (Ward 1) in South Choiseul, Tongoau Tabe.
MPA Tabe was speaking at the graduation ceremony of Forms 3 and 5 students of Wagina Community High School (CHS) on Monday 11 November.
A total of 33 students graduated during the occasion.
MPA Tabe took the opportunity to express gratitude to the parents and teachers of Wagina CHS for their support to the graduating students.
“In the context of our graduation ceremony today, you are the two key variables in the success formula for our students,” he told the parents and teachers.
He explained that the imparting of knowledge from teachers to students is the purpose of a school and the mainstay of the teaching profession and that the effectiveness of that teaching contributes immensely to the success of a student.
“The parents, on the other hand, are expected to create an environment at home that supports students with their schoolwork and encourages and motivates students to commit and dedicate themselves to their schoolwork, he added.
“Speaking mathematically, when the two variables are contriving together, their influence on the outcome can be optimal.
“It should be true then that when one variable is non-performing, the outcome, which is success, is sub-optimal.”
MPA Tabe further expressed that the analogy of that ‘success’ formula simply suggests that the success (and more success) of CHS can be vested in the commitments of both the parents and teachers to impart quality education and instil a commitment to be successful by students today and into the future.
“Parents must work together with teachers to leverage each other for the success of our students.
“Parents must participate in the policymaking of the school.
“Teachers, on the other hand, must continuously upgrade their qualifications to bring more quality to the education of our students,” he said.
He also highlighted some of the achievements by the school management over the last two years.
“I note with appreciation the substantial improvements in students’ discipline and students’ retention.
“The prefect system has also had success in improving students’ leadership skills.
“Tuition fee collection has also improved to 100%, which is undoubtedly a testament to our parents’ faith in the school,” he said.
He added that they have also worked very hard to convince the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) to establish its second sub-centre in Wagina in addition to Taro as of 2025.
“Against those formidable successes, I sincerely thank Principal Rabaua and his dedicated staff for their efforts and professionalism.
“There are changes that are coming based on the requirements of the new Education Act 2023 and I look forward to more discussions on the plans to address the requirements of the new Act that have implications for our status quo,” he said.
MPA Tabe thanked all those who have contributed in one way or another to making the day a success
“I can only promise one thing to you today: that I look forward very much to the graduation ceremony in 2025,” he concluded.
The graduation ceremony was graced by the presence of the Japanese Ambassador Yoshiaki Miwa who spent the weekend with the Wagina people.
