THE Malaita Provincial Government (MPG) has expressed its strong support for the establishment of Buy and Sell Products (BSP) Fuel station in the province.
At the official opening of the BSP Gas fuel station in Auki last week, Malaita Premier Elijah Asilaua acknowledged the BSP fuel station management for their commitment to investing in the province.
He praised the team for choosing Malaita and emphasised the importance of such investments in the community.
Premier Asilaua highlighted the fuel service sector’s importance to various industries in Malaita, including cocoa and copra farmers, fishermen, women, tourist operators and agricultural workers.
He also highlighted the vital role the service plays for teachers, students, healthcare professionals and patients.
“The opening of this BSP Fuel Station is a significant milestone in our efforts to decentralise fuel storage closer to the people.”
“This will reduce freight charges and fares, providing a more efficient transport and logistics network.
“My government is working closely with the national government and development partners to enhance economic and trade links through upcoming infrastructure projects, such as roads and bridges, to further stimulate economic growth,” Premier Asilaua said.
Premier Asilaua emphasised that petroleum products are essential commodities as they enable the movement of people, goods and services across the islands.
“Due to the country’s geographical scatteredness, fuel is crucial for transportation and power generation, driving various economic sectors such as manufacturing, fishing, tourism, agriculture, small and medium-scale industries and mining.
“These sectors are vital for employment and income generation, both in the formal and informal economies.
“The active participation of our youth in entrepreneurship is key to the growth of these sectors
“Malaita is home to a large youth population, with 53 percent of the province’s population being young people,” he added.
The Premier expressed appreciation for BSP Gas’ investment, which he believes will help modernise Auki and create a more vibrant township.
He emphasised that the investment would provide better transport services for rural areas, promoting inclusive and sustainable development, particularly in smallholder agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.
The premier encouraged local vendors and citizens to embrace the new fuel services with an entrepreneurial mindset, ensuring that they make the most of this valuable investment.
the Directing Manager of BSP Fuel Station, David Leong highlighted that the vision behind the station is to improve fuel accessibility in Malaita.
“This initiative not only provides fuel but also creates investment and job opportunities for the local community.
“We are here to serve the people of Malaita and support the growth of the local economy.”
Mr Leong thanked the Malaita Provincial Government for its support, which he said has been instrumental in bringing the project to fruition.
