Dear Editor – I write to express my personal appreciation to the Leader of the Independent Group and Member of Parliament (MP) for North East Guadalcanal, Dr Derek Sikua, for having explained in his letter to the Solomon Star, today, 2 March 2017, how the MPs’ scholarships act as a ‘Good Samaritan’ for the disadvantaged groups in the community.
Dr Sikua explained that MPs’ scholarships bring equality among the people who were left out by the National Training Unit (NTU), adding scholarship awards look equally at every student regardless of race, gender, religion, background or academic performance, including those with physical disabilities.
Dr Sikua also revealed in his article that a new education bill will be passed in parliament soon that will change the nature of scholarship distributed to students, which government is hopeful to ease burden on its limited funds.
