Dear Editor – THE COMMUNITY based Rehabilitation Department in Makira/Ulawa province is appealing to the people of Makira/Ulawa province, donor partners and the SIG government for assistance.
The Coordinator of the Makira/Ulawa Provincial Community based Rehabilitation Programme, Ms Jemima Melody Siapu, has said her department has embarked on a mission to build a Centre for people with special needs, but lacks the financial and material assistance to fully execute the plan.
She stressed, in a statement to the local media, that the Persons’ With Disability Association of Makira/Ulawa province (PWDAMUP), in partnership with the Provincial Community based Rehabilitation (CBR) Unit within the provincial Health and Medical Service, have teamed up to facilitate the plan.
Ms Siapu has said the proposed Centre will accommodate an administration office for the PWDAMUP, an office for the CBR, a conference room, a training room and an exercise room for people with disabilities.
The building ground work is already underway with the house’s foundation nearing completion because of the initial aid of the Makira/Ulawa Province’s Health and Medical Services.
Ms Siapu said, although the project is self-financed, her organisation is appealing to donor partners, business houses and people to assist her team with the completion of the project, including cash donations and building materials.
Those willing to help should contact Ms Siapu as soon as possible.
In the meantime local fund raising programmes are underway.
Makira/Ulawa Province is in real need of a proper Centre for people with special needs and the initiatives already taken by the PWDAMUP, with help from the Provincial Medical Services, reflects much credit on the work undertaken so far in recognition that those with special needs deserve to have a proper place to do training and exercise.
