The ACOM flagship the MV Southern Cross is expected to arrive back in the country this weekend after completing its three-week relief mission to Vanuatu.
A statement from ACOM today said, MV Southern Cross has departed Luganville this morning for Honiara after spending over 3 weeks transporting relief supplies from Northern Provinces and Honiara to Port Vila.
The trip came about following the 7.3 Earthquake that has impacted a lot of families and communities around Port Vila and Efate.
The vessel left Honiara for Vanuatu just after Christmas loaded with donations from people and organisations that voluntarily donated food, cash and in kind.
Before departing Honiara ACOM facilitated a two-day appeal for freewill donations from the public to support victims of the Vanuatu earthquake.
ACOM said, it is guided by her mission statement to demonstrate God’s love in responding to human needs in loving service, in both peace and disaster time by providing free shipment of food supplies and non-food items to affected communities.
All collected food went directly to the Food Security and Agriculture Cluster (FSAC) to assist affected families.
Anglican Church in Vanuatu is part of the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM) which also includes Solomon Islands and New Caledonia.
In a brief ceremony this morning before the departure of the boat, the Diocesan Bishop of Vanuatu and New Caledonia, the Rt Rev. James Tama thanked the SX Officers for patience, dedication and faithfulness in rendering the inter-island mission.
The Southern Cross is expected to arrive in Honiara 2100hrs Sunday 26th January 2025.
Vanuatu is currently going through a process of recovery.
About 16 lives have been lost following the disaster.
