THE Marine Vessel (MV) owned by the Vatud Constituency in Temotu Province, MV Vatud Star, has run aground yesterday at the Kukum Prince Philip Highway coastline in Honiara.
This occurred around 1 pm yesterday as Cyclone Judy caused strong winds and rough seas continued to batter Honiara.
Solomon Star was unable to establish why the vessel was not moved from its anchorage location as early as possible before the strong winds and currents rampaged the capital. However, unconfirmed reports claimed that the vessel had engine problems.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mostyn Mangau has reminded people nationwide to take extra precautionary measures in bad weather.
Commissioner Mangau said, “As it has been issued by the Meteorological Service that a tropical disturbance overlays Solomon Islands, it is important for drivers, road users and sea travellers to always make good judgement and prioritise safety when travelling on our roads or crossing streams or rivers.”
He said, “I want to remind the drivers that speeding must be discouraged when driving on the roads as the roads can be slippery during bad weather. Pedestrians are advised to always carry an umbrella to avoid catching cold and getting sick.”
Commissioner Mangau said, “Small boats are advised to be careful on making any trips during this bad weather. Travelers on ships please look after yourselves during this bad weather when travelling and to always inform others of where you are going.”
“The weather is unpredictable and at times, we cannot overcome situations caused by nature. It is advisable to always reconsider decisions to travel during rough seas, strong winds and heavy rain,” Commissioner Mangau emphasised.
The RSIPF Commissioner urged parents to keep their children indoors to avoid illness and accidents. “Don’t allow them to play in the rain or the drain as flooding can occur due to the downpour.”
