THE change of name from ‘Western Province Second Appointed Day’ to ‘Western Province Day’ will be explained during the Western Province Second Appointed Day on Wednesday.
This was highlighted by the Western Provincial Assembly Non-Executive Member Hon Rence Sore on his Facebook timeline.
“We’ll explain the name change from Western “Second Appointed” Day to Western Province Day so come to the celebration,” he said.
Many people in the country were enquiring as to why did Western Province change the name from Western Provincial Second Appointed Day to Western Province Day.
Some commentators questioned whether it is legal to change a name that came about under an Act of Parliament.
The Western Province Day falls on 7th December but due to the bad weather caused by cyclone Jasper the celebration which was to be held over three days was rescheduled to begin on Wednesday and that is when the name change will be explained.
The celebration will conclude on Friday.
People from the different islands of the Western Province residing in Honiara are continuing with their preparations for the event which marks the day when the Western Provincial Government was established.
The Western Provincial Government was established on 7 December 1981 and this year’s Western Provincial Second Appointed Day celebration is the 42nd.
