Solomon Islands Athletics Federation (SIAF) National Championship is currently underway at the National Stadium at King George School in East Honiara.
The Athletics National Championship 2024 has kicked off on Tuesday at the National Stadium with few track and field events in the morning.
The weeklong championship was officially opened by the Minister of Home affairs Hon. Isikeli Vave in the afternoon.
Speaking during the official opening, Minister Vave emphasized the athletes to compete to the best of their ability representing their province, clubs and schools to best of their abilities.
“I emphasized you to compete to the best of your ability representing your provinces, clubs and schools the best of your ability.
“This is your time to showcase your skill and talents if you want to go further in your athletics carrier making your parents, province, schools, clubs and country proud,” Minister Vave said.
“This is the moment to showcase what you have, thanks to the Athletics Federation for this platform bringing together our provincial based athletes here to compete with pride representing their province,” Vave said.
“To the athletes from schools and clubs in Honiara who will be part of this weeklong championship, do it with the best of you ability making your schools or clubs proud,” Vave said.
He reminded the athletes to compete with pride and respect each other.
SIAF President Michael Kulai told local media during the official opening that, teams from provinces including Guadalcanal, Malaita, Makira, Central Islands, Western, and Honiara are part of the championship.
Some of the schools and clubs also participating include; Tenaru, King George, Koloale and few other schools.
Few track and field events were completed on Tuesday and the winners were awarded their medals.
The championship will run until Friday.
