Solomon Islands government and National disaster management office (NDMO) together with the stake holders and partners who have engaged in the recent April flash flooding are currently undergoing a two day workshop at the Mendana Hotel
The workshop involved stake holders and partners to evaluate and expose ideas on what was needed or suitable in dealing with during time of natural disasters.
Speaking on the opening of the workshop chairman of the national disaster council Dr Melchior Mataki kindly adviced the participants on the primacy of the national response management plan and the National Disaster council Act.
“I request all stakeholders within and outside government to improve and develop your respective plan of engagement for disaster management and ensure that are aligned and supportive of the national responsive plan.
“The disaster arrangements provide for preparedness, for response to and recovery from disasters. During a disaster, the arrangement is intended for the assessment of impacts and decision making at all level for the optimal utilisation of available resources,” Dr Mataki said.
He said that the purpose of this is to improve and develop better stake holder’s response plans, identify weaknesses and improvement of the national disaster responsive plan.
“We need to consistently interpret experience, distil lessons, apply and monitor the lessons as part of the work program during and before disasters” Dr Mataki said
“To enable us achieve the above, organisation and people should be flexible to apply lesson distilled from their experience, rationalise their relevance based on the recent disaster and the evolving context, and increase their robustness by modelling future disaster to plan for new disaster operation” Dr Mataki added.
