A NEW bakery shop which offers sugar-free breads and other tasty pastries for local customers is making good progress since opening up early this year.
Located at the Townground Plaza, West Honiara it was known for its tasty bread and cake products.
It is called “THE BAKERY”.
This bakery shop caters for everyone; they offer a wide range of baked products, some of which have never been made in the Solomon Islands before. Ranging from its most famous sugar-free breads, French sticks, kumara buns, pumpkin buns and also varieties types of pastries (made with sugar and cream). The sugarless breads are great for those of you who are health cautious and who are diabetic.
This bakery shop is owned by Miss Gol Khadem.
She said, the bakery shop is different from other bakery shops operating in Honiara, as it is a bakery, which provides products from a bread shop and a cafe. It is the first of its kind.
Gol was brought up in the Solomons, and completed her education overseas. The lifestyle, and the people in the Solomons made her decide to come back and start her own business here.
She is originally a Baha’i from Iran, and her family came to Honiara in 1979. So she said this is home for her, as she grew up here and her heart is here.
Her parents came here as Baha’is and they became citizen of the Solomon Islands. Her Father started an architectural firm here in Honiara and now has 5 offices in 5 different locations in the Pacific.
Her mother had the first photocopy centre in Honiara at the NPF plaza, before the tension. Therefore she feels that this is home for her, as she grew up here and many of you may know her.
“I have been in the Solomon Islands for as long as I can remember and regard here the Solomons as my home, therefore I wanted to do something nice for the people, offer some kind of a new dimension and create something good that the people can enjoy. That was what I was looking for when I decided to start off – The Bakery.”
“This bakery shop is different from other bakery shops operating in Honiara because here we have customers from grassroots level to Parliamentarians coming in.”
She said that she uses local products as much as she can, such as coconut, banana, pumpkin and so forth,” she told the Solomon Star yesterday.
“At ‘The Bakery’ we promote healthy products by using the local products from local Solomon Islands,” said Gol.
“Our products are non-sugary. All our bread is king size, and the only bakery that does not use sugar in our bread. Most importantly we bake our bread by using filter water.”
Some of the products the bakery offering are, large coffee, regular coffee, takeaway coffee, ice coffee, bush lime, Hot break chocolate, milk shakes, hot pizza, whole meal bun, decaf tea, green tea, rasp-berry&peach tea, big wedding cake, PNG coffee, coconut pastries, cream bun, sugarless bread and many more.
“Here we offer varieties of breads which most people in Honiara want and preferred buying each day when they come here.
“One product we produce here is the bread without sugar. This bread also targets people with diabetic because most or all bread being produced in Honiara are with sugar so we decided to make this bread without adding sugar for health cautions people and diabetic.”
She added, that bread is not suppose to have sugar, unless it is a sweat bread,” she explained.
She said, the bakery which operates under the G.K Enterprises has maintained A+ hygiene in their business operation.
“This bakery has great concern over hygiene. It was given A+ for hygiene by the health department. Saying they have not seen such a hygienic and clean kitchen in the Solomon Islands before, she said with a smile.
She calls on government ministries and companies who normally organise meetings and conferences to place their orders for pastries, buns, rotis pizzas and breads in any of their future meetings.
“We have all local hard working staff here that can do catering if they order through us, we are happy to offer special cost for them,” she added.
