Two new standby generators and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system valued at SBD 3 million have arrived at Honiara International Airport.
This investment will ensure continuous power to critical infrastructure supporting aeronautical operations, improving reliability and reducing power disruptions risks.
The provision of equipment is supported by the World Bank, and is being implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2).
The state-of-the-art prime standby generator sets, designated as 150kVA, along with a 100kVA UPS system, have been supplied by the Joint Venture of Raf Ojakh LLC and Chongqing Hydropower Equipment Company Limited from the Republic of Armenia.
As part of the contract, the suppliers covered the installation, testing, commissioning, and training for the new equipment.
The purchasing of the new equipment reflects the Government’s commitment to modernizing essential equipment and strengthening the aviation and communication sectors.
The back-up generators and UPS system arrived at Honiara International Port on March 1, 2024, and were delivered to the site on March 4, 2024.
The equipment will provide reliable power to essential systems like air traffic communication, rescue fire services, and airfield ground lighting, ensuring the airport’s services operate smoothly.
Permanent Secretary of MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, expressed enthusiasm about the new acquisition, stating: “The arrival of this modern power solution marks a significant step forward in our efforts to strengthen the country’s aviation and communication infrastructure. With the generous support of the World Bank through SIRAP2, we can now ensure continuous and reliable operations even during power outages.”
The procurement of the generator and UPS system is part of SIRAP2’s ongoing efforts to enhance capacity and operational efficiency in alignment with the Solomon Islands’ broader infrastructure development goals.
