Villagers of Nafinua and the surrounding communities in east Malaita took delivery of their new water supply, Friday.
European Union funded the project under the Rural Development Programme (RDP) administered by the Ministry of Provincial Government.
RDP principal team leader Augustine Meti said they were pleased to see the project completed.
He told the villagers the RDP, under which the water supply project was funded, will end next year.
“And you Nafinua communities have been the lucky ones to complete yours in time,” Meti added.
He said RDP was established to assist communities improve their livelihood.
“The program assists with water supply, school staff housing, clinics, and other services geared towards enhancing and improving people’s standard of living,” Meti said.
Chairman of Nafinua water supply project Ariel Alate’e thanked RDP assisting them to complete the project.
He said they’ve been without water supply for more than 10 years, leaving them having to rely on streams and rivers.
Meanwhile, caretaker deputy prime minister and outgoing MP for East Malaita, Manasseh Maelanga, thanked the communities for their effort which resulted in the completion of the project.
He said the government was pleased to see this kind of project completed in order to assist the communities.
“This water supply will not only serve the communities here, but also others who pass by and need to quench their thirsts,” Maelanga said.
He praised the communities for their unity and cooperation.
“Nothing will happen without cooperation and togetherness between you people in the communities.
“The government or aid donors can fund projects but the onus is on you to work together as a community to complete whatever project is given to you.”
