THE National Hosting Authourity (NHA) Executive Director Christian Nieng has hailed the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport (SINIS) as a beacon of hope.
Mr Nieng was speaking at the SINIS Open Day last Friday. The Open Day Theme was ‘On the Road to Palau’.
The Open Day was held to showcase the wide range of sports programmes and services available at the high-performance centre. It also saw the signing of a technical event-based Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between SINIS and the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI), marking a significant step towards enhancing Solomon Islands preparation for the 2025 Palau Pacific Mini Games in June.
The event brought together sports National Federations (NFs), aspiring athletes and members of the public.
“SINIS stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for all athletes aspiring to elevate their performance. Today, we have witnessed the dedication, passion and potential that our athletes possess. This institute is not just a training ground, it is a nurturing environment where elite preparations take place, paving the way for future champions and the next generation of ‘Team Solomon Islands,” Mr Nieng said in his remarks.
Whilst thanking those who turned up for their attendance, Mr Nieng reminded them that SINIS is a legacy left behind by the 17th Pacific Games for the development of sports in the country.
“I am proud to see that with the facilities we have after the 17th Pacific Games, our country is starting to attract hosting of international events which include in sport.
“I am excited that SINIS and its managers and operations are ready for you. Feel free to ask questions from the departments of SINIS so that they can assist you with the knowledge of SINIS services.
“The High-Performance Centre is recognised by the world because we met international standards in the of services we offer here. SINIS is recognised by an association for elite sports performance sectors and we should be proud that Solomon Islands is one of the countries that offers High Performance centre in the region.
“I am proud of the SINIS Staff, they have been trained well and they are experts in their own fields and are able to operate the High-Performance Centre,” Mr Nieng added.
The National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) President Martin Rara reflected on the significance of the gathering and the promise it holds for athletes and the country’s sporting community.
“By collaborating and utilizing the expertise offered here [SINIS], we can enhance the excellence of our athletes and facilitate their growth on the international stage. Together we can create a robust support system that empowers our athletes to succeed and shine brightly in competitions.
“Let us remember that our commitment to athlete development extends beyond today’s events. It is an ongoing journey that requires our collective effort and dedication. With the right support and a unified approach, we can ensure that our athletes not only compete but excel, inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams in sports.
“Thank you all for attending the SINIS ‘Open Day’ 2025, for your unwavering support and for your commitment to the future of sports in Solomon Islands. Let us continue to work hand in hand to nurture talent, foster excellence and elevate our nation’s sporting achievements,” Mr Rara said.
Amongst sports national federations, athletes, coaches and the public attending the ‘Open Day’ were students and representatives from St John School, Ilia Community High School, Bishop Epalle Catholic School, Tuvaruhu Community High School (CHS), White River Community High School, Honiara High Secondary (HHS), Norman Palmer Community High School, Zion Christian Academy, Solomon Islands National University (SINU) and Don Bosco Technical School.
Apart from learning of the different departments and services within SINIS, the event involved participants undergoing activities arranged by SINIS Wellbeing Lifestyle Performance (WLP) Department.
