THERE is no firm plan for any lockdown within the Honiara City in light of the second wave of COVID-19 infection in the country.
This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary (PS) Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) Pauline McNeil, brushing aside rumours claiming a lockdown is looming.
Speaking during yesterday’s Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s (OPMC) sponsored talk-back show over the national broadcaster, Mrs McNeil said there are rumours circulating of a possible lockdown.
“However, the Health Ministry is not considering any lockdown and the rumours are not right,” she said.
She explained that lockdown is not being considered because the Ministry of Health believed it could cope and handle the current second wave of COVID infections.
She said the second wave of infections is generally “mil” and the hospitals are already equipped with important equipment such oxygen and other facilities.
At the moment more testing are being done at entry points such as wharves and airports to control the spread.
She reiterated the need for members of the public to continue to apply COVID-19 health protocols and measures such as wearing of masks, washing of hands using sanitisers and practicing social distancing.
