The National Referral Hospital Rainwater Catchment System Improvement Project was recently completed and handed over last week. The project was co funded by the Rotary Clubs of Honiara, Canberra and Balwyn in Australia at a total cost of SBD $131,000.00 and was implemented on the ground by the Rotary Club of Honiara.
The project worked to improve the water quality at 27 rainwater tanks at the hospital, The tanks work as a backup to the mains water supply connections. Improvements made to the water tanks include:
- Removal of rusted galvanized flat iron covering timber deckings and instalment of corrugated Color bond roofing sheets and flashing
- Flushing out the tanks to remove accumulated dirt in the bottom of the tanks
- Installation of PVC Leaf Beaters and First Flush Diverters to minimise dirty rainwater from entering the tanks
- Gutter repairs
- Repair of timber decking
- Installation of float valves on tanks connected to the mains supply
- Replacement of one corroded Aluminium tank with a 3000 litre Poly tank
Receiving the water tanks from the Honiara Rotary Club, CEO of the National Referral Dr George Malefoasi expressed appreciation and thanked the Club Rep for the assistance.
“I would like to thank the Rotary Club for the timely assistance. The water tanks were in need of improvement and your help is timely. It will make sure that patients and carers living at the hospital have clean drinking water when the main water supply goes off. As we all know water is an important part of our daily lives and so this assistance will go along way in serving our patients here at NRH,” said Dr Malefoasi.
