Police in Honiara have arrested a driver in connection with an alleged attempt to kidnap young girls and boys, following reports from concerned citizens.
Deputy Commissioner Ian Vaevaso confirmed to the media last week that the police had received a report from a victim at Solomon Islands National University’s (SINU) Kukum campus, where an attempted abduction was allegedly made.
Vaevaso stated that this arrest marks the beginning of a broader investigation, and more arrests are expected to follow.
He also revealed that a child has been missing for the past two weeks, and the police are actively working to apprehend suspects related to these reports.
While addressing public concerns, Vaevaso emphasized that some rumors circulating on social media, particularly about the abduction of a student at Tamlan School, have not been verified.
However, he reassured the public that the police are taking these rumors seriously and investigating them thoroughly to determine the facts.
Vaevaso urged the public to assist the police with any information that could lead to the arrest of those involved.
In a separate incident, Robert Feratalia, the father of a girl who was allegedly targeted in an abduction attempt near Betikama Adventist College, confirmed that the incident is true.
Feratalia reported the case to Naha Police, and his daughter is currently traumatized after narrowly escaping the situation.
The police are now collaborating with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to address the issue and ensure the safety of children.
Regarding reports on social media suggesting that children are being abducted for organ trafficking, Vaevaso stated that there is no evidence to support such claims.
He called on the public to remain calm but vigilant and to ensure the safety of their children.
