VODAFONE Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan believes the national side is heading in the right direction despite failing in the Wellington 7s Saturday.
Fiji finished third in the tournament after beating England 14-7 in the 3rd/4th place playoff.
The side earlier lost to South Africa in the Cup semi-final of the tournament which was eventually won by New Zealand.
The All Blacks Sevens, which now leads the HSBC Sevens World Series on 99 points, overcame the Blitzbokke 21-0 in the final.
South Africa is placed second on 97 followed by Fiji on 73 and England on 68.
Ryan said they have to take a step at a time to achieve the ultimate goal.
He said the top four finish in the series was his target.
“If we want to be a strong contender for the top four positions then we need resources and contacts,” Ryan said.
“We’re lucky we have such talented players. It’s a long term project and it doesn’t happen overnight.
“I said it from day one, I said it when we beat New Zealand 44-0 in Dubai that it doesn’t mean that we can do that every week.
“We’ve got to show patience and need to put some good foundation stones.
“I think we’ve shown some consistency and eventually it will lead to better performances.”
