A woman has been declared the new member of parliament (MP) for Vatud Constituency after counting concluded last night.
She is the only woman MP in the 10th Parliament after most of the women candidates lost their seats.
Freda Soriacomua ousted two term MP for the constituency Clay Forau Soalaoi.
Reports from Lata said after counting of 18 polling stations in Vatud was completed, Freda was declared the winner after bagging 681 ballots ahead of Soalaoi with 659 votes.
Electoral Manager Paul said public cooperation with police officers in Lata has been encouraging and must be maintained during the provincial elections on December the 10th.
Soalaoi served two terms in Parliament, during the Sogavare government where he served as the minister of health and medical services.
He was the minister for Police and National security under Sikua’s government and former minister for foreign affairs and external trade in the NCRA government.
Soriacomua is a private business woman married to a foreigner.
