Honiara reaffirms recognition of One China Principle, Beijing reiterates ‘there is only one China in the world’ following Taiwan elections outcome
SOLOMON Islands Government has reaffirmed its recognition of the One China Principle and that Taiwan is an integral part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) territory.
The reaffirmation followed the outcome of recent elections in Taiwan.
The Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Hon Jeremiah Manele called for international respect for PRC’s sovereignty over Taiwan and support for the maintenance of peace and security along the Taiwan straits.
“Solomon Islands values its relations with the People’s Republic of China who is Solomon Islands Comprehensive and Strategic Partner. The Two countries continue to work together on a number of sectors in the country,” Caretaker Minister Manele said in a statement yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Honiara in response to a few media reports which it said covered the election from ‘incorrect perspectives’ said, “The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China would like to remind that both inappropriate titles on newly-elected Taiwan leaders and incorrect name on the Taiwan region are against the one-China policy and the spirit of UN resolution 2758 and reinforced statements issued last Saturday by spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry and a mainland Chinese spokesman.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement that, “The Taiwan question is China’s internal affair.”
Whatever changes take place in Taiwan, the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China will not change, the spokesperson remarked.
The Chinese government’s position of upholding the one-China principle and opposing “Taiwan independence” separatism, “two Chinas” and “one China, one Taiwan” will not change, said the spokesperson.
The international community’s prevailing consensus on upholding the one-China principle and long-standing and overwhelming adherence to this principle will not change, noted the spokesperson.
“The one-China principle is the solid anchor for peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits,” the spokesperson added.
“We believe that the international community will continue to adhere to the one-China principle, and understand and support the Chinese people’s just cause of opposing ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities and striving to achieve national reunification.”
The Chinese mainland spokesperson on Saturday commented on the outcomes of Taiwan leadership and legislature elections.
The spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office Chen Binhua said the results reveal that the Democratic Progressive Party cannot represent the mainstream public opinion on the island.
Noting that Taiwan is China’s Taiwan, Chen said that the elections will not change the basic landscape and development trend of cross-Strait relations, will not alter the shared aspiration of compatriots across the Taiwan Straits to forge closer ties, and will not impede the inevitable trend of China’s reunification.
“Our stance on resolving the Taiwan question and realizing national reunification remains consistent, and our determination is as firm as rock,” Chen said.
“We will adhere to the 1992 Consensus that embodies the one-China principle and firmly oppose the separatist activities aimed at ‘Taiwan independence’ as well as foreign interference,” Chen said.
He said the mainland will work with relevant political parties, groups and people from various sectors in Taiwan to boost cross-Straits exchanges and cooperation, enhance cross-Straits integrated development, jointly promote Chinese culture, and advance the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations as well as the cause of national reunification.
