The Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet soccer team, the OPMC Bullets, has taken a new initiative to enhance people to people interaction and friendship through sports.
The Bullets travelled to Selwyn College in West Guadalcanal over the weekend to play two friendly matches with staff and students of the school as part of their preparation for the ongoing Inter-Ministry soccer competition.
Before the match, the Bullets donated a set of soccer outfit and balls to the school, which Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, Robert Iroga, said is a small token of appreciation to help the school in a small way to promote sports especially in teaching and to support staff at the school.
In addition, he said the Uniform is a gesture of goodwill and appreciation towards the school for accepting to host the OPMC Bullet’s request to play two friendlies with the school’s soccer teams.
Deputy Principal Administration Henry Tufa said the donation was a real morale booster for the school and shows OPMC’s effort in establishing a good sporting relation with the school.
The Bullets drew 1-1 with the school’s team 1 which comprise mainly of students and went down 4-5 against the school’s team 2, which comprised mostly of the teaching staff.
Chief of Staff Robert Iroga said the OPMC Bullet’s really appreciated the two friendlies which will help his coaching staff to use the results to draw a game plan for the Bullet’s matches during the Inter-Ministry Competition.
“These friendlies are important for us in our preparations for the Inter-Ministry matches as it tests our fitness level and to look at our strengths and weaknesses ahead of matches,” he said.
Head Coach Samson Fangamae said the friendlies have now given him an idea of what to expect in the Bullet’s matches against other ministries during the tournament.
Following the matches the Bullets players and staff enjoyed a session of interaction with the staff and students which now has established strong relations between them.
Mr Iroga encouraged the students to work hard in their academic studies and at the same actively get involved in sports which is crucial for the physical and mental health of students.
A return friendly between the two teams in Honiara will be announced towards the end of this month.
