THE Parliamentary Opposition Office has commended the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) for announcing its tough stance in managing the number of government scholarships in future.
The Opposition Office in a press statement on Thursday says the MEHRD in particular the Permanent Secretary, Dr Franco Rodie and his officials must be applauded for taking the decision which is in the best interest of the country to control the number of scholarships awarded to students.
The Opposition Office says mismanagement of scholarships is one of the reasons why government finances are blown up; therefore, it is only appropriate and proper that tough measures are in place to manage the number of scholarships within affordable levels.
The Opposition Office also emphasized that MEHRD in particular the National Training Unit (NTU) should manage the number of scholarships based on the development and relevant needs of the country.
Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Opposition Office has also acknowledged the MEHRD for its decision to terminate the agreement between the ministry and AMA University, Philippines and to stop sending students there.
This was after the ministry found out that AMA is not an accredited university.
On the other hand, the Parliamentary Opposition Office wants NTU to clarify reports that the government will also stop sending students to Cuba.
“NTU must clarify this for the benefit of both parents and students,” it said.
