THE Opposition says it is seeking clarification over plans by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare to demolish the Prime Minister’s official residence (Red House) at Vavaya Ridge.
In a statement, it said while the exercise would deem very costly, the Prime Minister needs to be transparent about the cost of the rebuilding of Red House; who has been contracted to carry out the work and how long it is expected for the project to take.
“These are questions the Prime Minister and his Government need to clarify to the public,” the statement said.
“This country needs to know who will be funding the rebuilding and how much it will cost.
“If this project would be funded by donors then this should also be made clear as well.
“But in the case, that this would be included in the budget next year; then the public has the right to know how much it will cost the Government,” the statement added.
The Opposition said it also understands that two other state houses – the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice – have also been earmarked to be demolished and rebuilt.
“It is important that the budgeting implementation must be made clear,” the statement said.
