“Burns Creek ought to be commended. This is because the community recognises the necessity to eliminate family violence and other anti-social behaviour from their homes and community”.
This was the message relayed by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Frank Prendergast to the people of Burns Creek during a one-day ORANGE DAY campaign against family violence on Sunday.
Commissioner Prendergast also expressed his delight to be able to visit Burns Creek community for the first time.
He conveyed that the Police will visit Burnscreek. “it is important that the RSIPF work together with the Burnscreek community RSIPF to not only address family violence related issues but other anti-social concerns affecting our youths”.
“Burnscreek has to appreciate the important role played by the police in ensuring a safe and secure environment for its citizens, and to achieve that the RSIPF is more than willing to provide assistance and support to leaders, elders, families and youths”, Commissioner Prendergast further highlighted.
The people of Burns Creek were also asked to stay calm as our elected leaders tried to solve their differences.
“As law abiding people, Burns Creek community must stay vigilant during the current political impasse”, quoted Mr. Prendergast.
“We must allow the parliamentary process to take its course and resist temptations to take matters into your own hands”.
The same message was highlighted by Assistant Commissioner National Capital & Crime Prevention, Mr. Gabriel Manelusi. He said, “a safe community is members within families showing respect to each other and the wider community”.
“A safe community is also about families taking initiative in terms of crime prevention”, said Mr. Manelusi.
“There could not be a more suitable time to showcase the closeness of our communities than now, considering the current political environment”.
Burnscreek is also told that continuous efforts to reduce incidences of family violence by RSIPF and stakeholders will continue.
“The Community Policing and Family Violence Unit and its partners will continue to work closely in partnership with communities, and Burns Creek community is a good example.” said Director of Community Policing and Public Relations, Inspector Solomon Sisimia.
“This is because current statistics revealed family violence as a pressing national issue. As such, an important strategy is that communities such as Burns Creek work as partners with the police and stakeholders”, said Inspector Sisimia.
The Ministry of Women, Youth & Family Affairs representative, Ms Vaela told the gathering that the Family Protection Act 2014 provides for the prosecution and punishment of perpetrators of family violence.
“Domestic violence is a criminal offence and communities such as Burns Creek can play a major role to identify and address all forms of violence against women and girls”, said Ms Vaela.
“Burns Creek will work with the Police”, said Chief Peter Usi. “We will ensure to support RSIPF and its officers to undertake their duties within Burns Creek community undisturbed.
