GOVERNMENT funded students studying at a number of universities in Fiji have finally received a portion of their much awaited allowance for the month of June.
Reports reaching the paper over the weekend said, the students only received FJD$600 (SBD$1800) on Friday.
The students were supposed to receive FJD$1040 (SBD$3100) per month.
However, its understood the current financial situation affecting the country has resulted in the partial payment.
A student studying at the University of the South Pacific (USP) at Laucala campus, Suva yesterday confirmed the payment to the Solomon Star.
“Most of the students have received their allowance on Friday through their bank accounts. However they only receive FJD$600.”
The student said, the remaining amount is expected to be wired into the students’ accounts towards the end of the month.
The student pointed out this amount would give some relief to the students inorder to settle their rentals and other outstanding payments as well as pay for their food.
The student added for the past week or so most of the students have skipped meals because of very little finance to support them pay for their food.
Some of them have to borrow money from others to sustain themselves.
They also eviction notice from landlords for failing to pay up their rentals on time.
Following the payment on Friday the students have also been warned of the country’s financial situation and the likely impact it would have on them until the end of the year.
The students who are currently on a mid year break have been reminded to use their money wisely.
