THE bond between Australia and Solomon Islands is strong and growing as both countries celebrate a new record in the number of Solomon Islanders working under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme in Australia.
In a statement on Friday, Australia announced that last week a new record of over 3000 Solomon Islanders are now living and working in Australia under the scheme – a 1,580 per cent increase since 2019.
“Congratulations to the workers who achieved this milestone this week, and to all the thousands of workers who contributed to this success over many years,” the statement last week said.
“Labour mobility continues to be a win-win for both our countries, creating strong links between communities and fostering deep connections amongst our Pacific family.
“Pacific Australia Labour Mobility workers are earning good incomes, acquiring new skills and expanding their own horizons.”
The statement added that Australia is proud to share economic opportunities with Solomon Islands, its close friend and partner.
“Working together, Solomon Islands and Australia are building a stronger, more resilient, more prosperous, and more inclusive Solomon Islands – and a secure region.
“Together we can achieve even more economic success: Australia supports Solomon Islands Government’s target of 2,600 workers to annually, with 5,500 workers by 2023, and 10,000 workers by 2025,” the statement said.
