Dear Editor – I wish to express my concern about the increase in the population and the various building infrastructures developments from both private and public sectors on Taro Island.
The increase is turning the one and half square kilometer Taro island in Choiseul Bay in becoming over crowded.
Half of the island taken with the airstrip and swamp and this is forcing developments to squeeze on the remaining half.
When my pioneer government established its headquarter on the island in 1992, the intention was to quickly negotiate with Choiseul Bay Association and develop the mainland.
However, after 25 years of becoming a province, no tangible development is taking place on the mainland, although the land is now fully secured for the province.
This is very disappointing and the blame must go to the national government.
Just like any other provincial capital, Taro island is also experiencing people throughout the province moving in to do business, work and settle on nearby islands.
There is a danger of possible health hazards, unwanted social behavours and conflicts with surrounding landowners.
I urge the expected provincial government to be formed after this year’s Assembly Election to priortise the work on Choiseul Bay Township on the three square kilometre area of the mainland.
Work should begin this year in order to quickly ease the crowdedness on Taro island.
Thank you in advance.
