THE Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will begin scrutinizing the “2024 Supplementary Appropriation Bill” in Parliament as of Tuesday.
Chairman Gordon Darcy Lilo confirmed this while contributing to the Special Adjournment motion moved by Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele on Monday.
The motion allows the PAC to call witnesses to testify on the bill and permits the Prime Minister’s delegation to travel to Auki, Malaita Province, to celebrate the province’s 2nd Appointed Day.
MP Lilo urged Members of Parliament of Malaita Province in the PAC to remain for the hearings over the next two days before traveling to Auki for the celebration.
MP Lilo also called for the establishment of a parliamentary calendar to prevent special adjournments and suspensions.
He emphasized that the business of Parliament must proceed as scheduled when the house is in session.
In response, PM Manele stated that the delegation to Auki would depart on Wednesday, allowing sufficient time for the PAC to meet.
He said the delegation would return on Thursday night, leaving Friday, Saturday and Sunday available for PAC deliberations.
“I believe there is sufficient time for the PAC to meet and deliberate on the bill,” PM Manele said.
PM Manele also acknowledged the need for a Parliamentary calendar, stating that while Parliamentary business is a priority, other commitments such as the Second Appointed Day and international engagements where the Prime Minister and Ministers are required to attend also need consideration.
Parliament is scheduled to adjourn until Monday 19 August.
