THE Malaita Provincial Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Solomon Islands National Youth Congress (SINYC) and the Malaita Youth Council to launch the Youth Economic and Climate Action (YECA) project in Malaita.
The YECA initiative will be piloted in three communities in the province. These are Oibola Community in Langalanga, Namosalabe Community in Central Kwara’ae and Adakwa Community in East Malaita.
The project aims to empower youth by building their capacity to drive economic growth through climate-smart agriculture, increasing access to entrepreneurial opportunities and boosting youth participation in climate change resilience efforts.
President of Malaita Youth Council, Philip Subu expressed gratitude to the Solomon Islands National Youth Congress for selecting Malaita as the site for this significant initiative.
He also thanked Plan International for funding the project, which is set to benefit Malaita youth.
Chairman of the Solomon Islands National Youth Congress, Harry James Olikwailafia shared his excitement about the partnership and its potential to make a lasting impact on the youth in the province.
He highlighted that the YECA project aligns with key national policy goals aimed at fostering sustainable economic development and climate resilience.
YECA Project Coordinator for Malaita, Richard Olita stated that his team is preparing to visit the pilot communities to meet with local youth groups and begin implementing the project.
The YECA initiative is funded by Plan International Ireland with support from the European Commission through Plan International Pacific Solomon Islands and is implemented by SINYC.
