Pedestrians walking along the Honiara City National Library walkway escaped a near fatal accident when a reckless driver drove his car onto the walkway last week.
One of the pedestrians, David Mola said the car with the registered number plate MB 1740 drove out of the busy traffic onto the walkway opposite the library and sped along towards Fijian quarter.
“The car drove at high speed towards the walking public just below the Catholic Holy Cross Cathedral, forcing them to jump off the walkway.
“When he reached the section of the road turning in to Fijian quarter, he swerved in,” Mr Mola told this paper.
Mr Mola said the no-care attitude to traffic rules displayed by the driver is totally deplorable.
He said the incident was not the first of its kind for him to witness. ” I have witnessed so many similar incidents over the years and the persistent cases of reckless driving in Honiara shows the slackness of the Honiara City Council Law Enforcement officers and the Kukum Traffic Police in ensuring strict aherence to traffic rules by drivers.”
Mr Mola said the traffic police should always be present on the road to control the traffic during peak hours to enure that drivers do not attempt to make shortcuts and endanger the lives of their passengers and pedestrians.
“Police presence on the road to control the traffic during peak hours will deter such menace driving.
“Also the Honiara City Council Law enforcement officers must be on the look-out for careless and drunk drivers. They also have a role to play in ensuring traffic rules are adhered to.
“All this traffic related offences are happening in front of their eyes and they should act swiftly to address them,” Mr Mola added.
It is expected that the completion of the Kukum Highway Road Improvement project, including the new Mataniko Bridge will ease the growing problem of traffic congestion in Honiara.
