THE role of Taskforce Janus is only to do investigation.
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare was explaining in parliament the fundamental role of Taskforce Janus during deliberations on the Anti-Corruption Strategy recently.
Mr Sogavare said Janus worked closely with the Director of Public Prosecution Office to investigate.
He said if the case investigated is criminal in nature then police will arrest but if it is an administrative matter which could be dealt with by responsible authorities then disciplinary measures like suspension or termination could be taken.
Mr Sogavare made this explanation after North East Guadalcanal MP Dr Derek Sikua and East Honiara MP Douglas Ete questioned the role of Janus.
Dr Sikua said it is important to know how the work of Janus is connected with authorities like the Public Service Commission and the government ministries.
Mr Ete stated that the role Janus played is making this country operate like a communist nation or a dictatorial government.
Therefore, he said the government need to clearly define the work of Janus and where to draw the boundary of its roles, separated from the mandated government authorities.
The MPs also wanted to know the meaning of the word Janus.
Mr Sogavare said he did not know the meaning of the word Janus but he will check with those who came up with the name for clarification.
In the meantime, Mr Sogavare said Taskforce Janus will continue to intervene and investigate public servants, if endorsed by the authorities within those offices.
