THE National Secondary School Games (NSSG) was officially opened by the Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare at Lawson Tama, Monday.
The opening ceremony was marked with all school teams parading from the Honiara City Council (HCC) to Lawson Tama.
Hundreds of the thousands of student athletes from the 39 participating secondary schools attended the ceremony.
In Monday’s ceremony, Guest of Honour, Prime Minister Sogavare thanked all participating schools for being part of the first ever National School Games.
“I’m delighted to be here to open the inaugural National Secondary School Games.
“I understand it’s the first of its kind. In the past we used to have the School Carnival with only schools from within Honiara but today we have schools from most of our provinces.
“I would like to thank all participating schools and teachers for making the effort to attend.
“I know it’s not easy but your commitment in ensuring that your schools attend these Games is truly appreciated.
“To all student athletes who will compete in the Games, I urge you all to commit to the pledge that you have just taken and respect it,” Prime Minister Sogavare said.
Prime Minister Sogavare thanked the Chairman of the NSSG, Karl Kuper and his committee for organizing the Games.
He said he understands the committee had to work against time to host the Games with limited funds, however they managed to pull it together.
He extended his acknowledgement to all who have rendered support towards the hosting of the event.
NSSG Chairman, Karl Kuper in his brief remarks also acknowledged all participating schools for being part of the inaugural School Games.
“Welcome all the participating schools who have taken your efforts, resources and commitment to participate in this long waited national event.
“You have come as far as North from Adaua in Malaita to Bellona in the South, from Wainoni in the East to Buri in Rannonga Western Province, all making up the 39 schools and 3000 or so athletes and officials.
“Your participation has provided the diversity that is truly reflective of our beloved Solomon Islands,” Kuper said.
The Games will kick off its respective sports starting today.
