PORT MORESBY, ( POST COURIER) -The Puma Energy Papua New Guinea Sevens train-on squad has been finalised to prepare for tournaments in Singapore and New Zealand.
PNG Sevens assistant coach Douglas Guise yesterday confirmed the 15 players that they will use to select 12 players for each tournament.
Guise said an extended squad of 18 players have been in training since Wednesday and following the two-day Capital Rugby Union (CRU) Sevens that ended yesterday, 15 were identified.
The Singapore tournament is from October 31 to November 1.
“The Singapore tournament will basically be a lead-up for the Oceania Sevens in New Zealand,” Guise said.
Guise clarified that from the New Zealand tournament, the winner will gain Oceania’s slot at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
“The second and third runner-up will have a second chance via the repercharge early next year not confirmed as yet,” he added.
He further said the tournament will also act as qualifier for the Wellington and Hong Kong legs of the World Sevens Series next year as well.
The Oceania Sevens will be staged from November 14-15.
Guise said the squad has a new look with added size, plus some promising new talent that will be given a chance to be exposed during the Singapore trip.
The core of the squad has been retained with notable inclusions including Pukpuk backrower Koroseta Veni, Morobe Hammerhead Sharks dynamic Robin Loma and Torres Strait Islander George Morseo.
The PNG Sevens squad: Lawrence Kuso Jr, Billy Torea, Koroseta Veni, Butler Morris, Stanis Susuve, Tissa Kautu, Arthur Clement, Hensley Peter, Robin Loma, Manu Guise, Paul Nelson, Henry Kalua, George Morseo, Wesley Vali and Willie Tiran.
