POLICE have arrested and charged a man suspected of burning down three houses and a kitchen in Anofiu village, East Kwara’ae last week.
Atori police yesterday confirmed that the suspect had allegedly burnt down his own house, along with those of his father and brother.
Police also alleged that he (the suspect) burnt down the houses intentionally, whilst his own wife and children, his brother and his family and father were still in it.
Michael Ramosaea of Atori police said that the suspect had been remanded in police custody however has been referred to Kilufi Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
“He (suspect) has been referred to Kilufi Hospital under Police escort for psychiatric evaluation.
“This was after his family had claimed him to be psychologically distressed or mentally ill.
“He will be evaluated there and then have his medical and psychiatric report referred to police and the courts,” Mr Ramosaea said.
Police will again file charges upon the outcome of his evaluation and also on the medical reports provided by the psychiatric department at Kilufi hospital.
Mr Ramosaea added that no one was hurt during the alleged arson.
Meanwhile attempts to talk to the Director of Kilufi’s Psychiatric Department, Jack Kauta were unsuccessful yesterday.
