Police in Choiseul Province in a joint operation with the Sexual Assault Unit of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) on 19 March 2018 arrested and charged a 73-year-old person with a disability for the alleged rape of his seven-year-old granddaughter at Boe Village on South Choiseul.
“The accused was charged with one count of indecent act and one count of rape and has been bailed to appear in the Taro Magistrate Court on 15 May 2018,” says Provincial Police Commander of Choiseul Province, Superintendent Cedar Nevol.
PPC Nevol adds: “It is alleged the accused raped the seven-year-old on separate occasions between 1 and 28 February 2017 in their home at Boe Village in South Choiseul. The incident happened after the victim’s parents left her with the suspect and her grandmother at home to attend school.”
“The alleged rape was reported to Police at Taro by an auntie of the victim after the seven-year-old complained of a sharp pain on her body. She then told her auntie about what had allegedly happened,” says Superintendent Nevol.
PPC Nevol adds: “This is a very sad case of a trusted person like the grandfather taking advantage of an innocent child. I call on parents to think about the safety of their children especially a girl child before letting them live even with relatives.”
The maximum penalty if found guilty for the charge of indecent act is 10 years imprisonment and for the charge of rape its life imprisonment if found guilty.
