DEPLOYMENT of police officers to Pelau in Ontong Java, Malaita Province Outer Islands has been welcomed as an important achievement.
Provincial member for ward 32 in Pelau Island, Chris Toher Mouka acknowledged and applauded the initiative by the Commissioner of Police, Frank Prendergast.
Mr Mouka said the deployment of two police officers to Pelau was an important development to the people of Malaita Outer Islands who are in desperate need of a law enforcement force like the police to help curb law and order situation there.
He said the presence of the police will greatly assist elders on the island to control criminal activities which he said are on the increase.
Mr Mouka said the sale of illegal alcoholic drinks and drugs have contributed to the increase in criminal activities among youths of the atoll islands.
He said Pelau Communities are looking forward to support and work together with the police officers.
Mr Mouka said this is the first time ever, police permanent posting presence is made to Pelau island of Malaita Province Outer Islands.
He said the Police post in Ontong Java, Pelau ward was established last year but has not been manned until the deployment of the two police officers this month.
“Mr Mouka said Pelau ward alone has a population of more than one thousand people excluding Luaniua ward.
