PEOPLE of Malaita Province are reminded to follow the law as police in the province continue to monitor meetings being held by the Malaita Provincial Government and some pressure groups since 16 September 2019.
The meetings were held following the decision by the National Government to switch the country’s diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) of Malaita Province, Superintendent Solomon Sisimia says:
“As PPC I am happy so far with the conduct of the public gatherings organised by the provincial government in Auki.
“The gatherings held so far have been peaceful but I am concerned that some people may capitalize on any future meetings to cause public disorder if they are not controlled properly.
“I therefore appeal to the good people of Malaita to respect each other and public safety while you exercise your democratic rights including freedom of expression.”
He adds: “Let us respect businesses operating at Auki and elsewhere in the province.
“Let us promote continuous peaceful dialogue and avoid any violence in our communities.
“People should not use humiliating or defamatory statements in public or in the social media against any person which may stir up hatred and violence.
“If you are concerned about any issue affecting your livelihood speak to your representatives in the provincial government or your National Member of Parliament and do not take the law into your own hands.”
Sisimia said his officers in Malaita continue to conduct awareness talks to communities in Central and West Kwara’ae, reminding people that if any one plans to hold a public gathering in the province, they must get approval from the Malaita Provincial Secretary and the PPC Malaita.
