STATE Owned Entity (SOE) Solomon Ports last week unveiled its hi-tech LED lighting system and CCTV Surveillance System at the Honiara Port.
The project is worth SBD$15 million and was fully funded by Solomon Ports itself.
The project is the largest of its kind in the South Pacific.
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare officially commissioned the new equipment.
Head of Human Resource James Gerea said this initiative is the largest in the South Pacific and is part of SIPA’s Green Port initiative to mitigate climate change.
It is understood that this will increase the confidence of the public in Solomon Ports ability to ensure a safe and secure environment for their cargoes.
The new ‘LED’ lighting system consumes less energy and is environmentally safe.
This is makes Solomon Ports the first in the South Pacific to use ‘LED lighting system’ in its facilities and operations.
Mr Sogavare said the installation of LED light and CCTV surveillance system will guarantee that the safety of all imported cargoes is protected.
“This is a significant achievement for SIPA.
“SIPA has come a long way since its establishment on June 4, 1956 and it is expanding.
“We have recently seen the expansion of the international wharf which to me is an indicator that SIPA is growing and becoming major player in the region, which is very encouraging,” he said.
This is an initiative to reduce electricity usage through the use of Led technology.
The SOE has stated that there are 20 LED lighting poles and 40 CCTV cameras installed around the Ports international wharf and domestic wharves.
