A LOCAL poultry farmer who focuses on broiler has lamented over the lack of local market for chicken farmers in the country.
This prompted him to call on the National Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) to provide market access for local chicken farmers.
The chicken farmer who requested anonymity spoke to Solomon Star a fortnight ago at Henderson in Central Guadalcanal.
He said his broiler chicken farm is located in Alligator Creek.
The poultry farmer stressed that securing a regular market for chicken is a stressful task for poultry farmers like him.
He said without a regular market for chicken in Honiara, he usually sells his products to Chinese shops.
However, the problem he encounters with the Chinese is that they usually bargain for lower prices.
“I won’t let them buy my chicken at the cheap price because I have expenses too,” he said.
The poultry farmer added that the lack of regular market for chicken will discourage poultry farmers from continuing their poultry activities.
He therefore called on the national government to stop importing chicken and eggs to give an opportunity for local chicken farmers to have a regular chicken market in the country.
