THE newly introduced sport in the country Powerlifting has finally elected its office bearers to look after the affairs of the sport in the country.
The election of the office bearers for the Honiara Powerlifting Association took place at the Multipurpose Hall on Sunday.
The newly elected secretary of the association Peter Michael confirmed this to Star Sports in an interview on Tuesday.
“Our newly elected President is Albert Oso, Vice is Victor Waia, Treasurer Lalma and I myself is the Secretary of the newly formed Honiara Powerlifting Association ,’’ Michael told Star Sports.
He said, after running without a body since the sport was introduced in the country late last year, die hard powerlifting athletes are now excited to started off small.
“Actually, this is great news for all power lifters in the country,’’ he said.
He added, it’s good to start off small and as time goes on they can be able to further develop in the country.
Meanwhile Michael encouraged other interested athletes in Honiara who wish to join powerlifting are most welcome to join them during their training sessions at the Multipurpose Hall.
“Our training days are usually from 6-7 am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday,’’ he added.
Meanwhile powerlifting was introduced to local athletes in the Honiara late last year by a Fijian national power lifter, known as iron lady, 62-year-old Senimili Turner who visited the country for her holidays.
The active athlete always trained three days a week during her trip here and suddenly caught the attention of local athletes who usually used the gym facilities at the Multipurpose Hall.
She later introduced the sport to local athletes upon requests made to her while she was here.
