THE Acting Provincial Police Commander (PPC) for Malaita Province Inspector Michael Ramosaea has called on youths in the Oloburi District of East Kwaio to respect their own people and communities.
PPC Ramosaea was responding to a media statement made by Sam Ngedea who accused police of the lack of response to his call for police presence at Lausia and Tagalo communities to deal with youths who destroyed a community Water Supply and brewed Kwaso in the said district.
The PPC said Mr. Ngedea should have reported the case to the Atoifi Police post, in East Kwaio to attend to the case rather than coming all the way to rubbish Auki police for the lack of response.
The PPC said while police headed policing work, it is important to note that policing is everyone’s business which means chiefs and community leaders must take the leading role in showing they want law and order by controlling their communities before calling for police support.
In the meantime, PPC Ramosaea assured Mr. Ngedwa that they are waiting on reports from Atoifi Police Post regarding the matter.
He said police will still investigate the matter and he asked the people of Oloburi to work together with police in negotiating the community criminals to surrender themselves.
The PPC said there are few cases in East Kwaio where people committing crimes are walking free in communities because of a lack of support from communities to have the criminals arrested.
With that, the PPC thanked chiefs in other communities around Malaita who take the leading role in persuading criminals in their communities to surrender to police, where he said other communities around the island should adopt the same approach.
