Newly appointed Provincial Police Commander (PPC) for Rennell and Bellona Province Peter Sitai wants the traffic laws to be enforced in the two southern most Islands of the country.
He revealed this to the Solomon Star during a short visit to Rennell recently.
The PPC said vehicle accidents and unlicensed drivers is one of the problem in the province that he wants to address this during his first three months in Rennell.
He said many people driving vehicles there do not have driving license and some have their licenses already expired.
Mr Sitai recalled an accident which just happened in one of the village in Rennell resulting in a child losing his life after he was hit by a vehicle.
Because of that they are working on ways to have the traffic laws fully operational in the province so that police in Renbell could act upon careless driving and arrest people, who drive on the road without license.
“I’m working closely with the provincial executive to formally bring this law into action, so that police could carry out their duties to crack down on illegal drivers and reckless driving.”
The Makira man finally stated that it is important for provinces to have the law, because it will help the work of the police to attend to traffic issues that need proper investigations for province-based officers to uphold law and order in our remote islands.
