The Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s National Referral Hospital (NRH), Dr Leaanne Panisi strongly advises pregnant women to take Pfizer vaccine in protecting themselves and their unborn child from Covid-19 infection.
The Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s Dr Leaanne Panisi stated this during the Covid-19 talkback show on SIBC, Sunday.
“I would strongly advise our pregnant women to come on board and take the vaccination to protect themselves and their babies during their pregnancy,” Dr Panisi said.
Dr Panisi said pregnant women during pregnancy stages have changes to their bodies.
She explained through these changes it puts a pregnant woman at higher risk of getting into severe infection and with the Covid-19 infection.
“Experiences from countries that have the Covid-19 infection find out that those women who are pregnant and with Covid-19 have the higher risk o f having the severe lung infection. They have short wind and it is so severe compared to those who are not pregnant,” Dr Panisi said.
She added through this they need admission at the hospital and need admission at the ICU or high density unit in the countries that have it.
“Pregnant women are also at risk of dying from that severe infection. Not only pregnant women, but higher risks babies died in their mothers’ womb before none months,” Dr Panisi said.
Dr Panisi said with those complications within pregnant women, health recommend women to take the Pfizer vaccine.
“This is from the studies and the reports from the countries that have the Covid-19 infection and taken the Pfizer vaccines. They found out that the vaccination have had the benefits for the mother and the unborn child.
“It lowers down the severity of the infection especially the lung infection that affects pregnant women. Not only has it also lowers the risk of the baby of dying inside the mother’s womb,” Dr Panisi said.
Meanwhile, National Health Emergency Operation Center (NHEOC) Incident Controller Dr Nemia Bainivalu said it is very important that women who are now pregnant to must take the vaccine.
