Dear Editor – The Prime Minister last week said Honiara will become a modern city ahead of the Pacific Games in 2023 with the generous help of the Government of Japan with the construction of new road infrastructure to ease traffic flow.
It is good to hear of such plans but one has also read of some of the urgent issues that will need attention prior to the Games such as drainage, traffic congestion, the curtailment of informal settlements, and especially the need for a greening of the city and for waste removal and urban cleanliness, to mention just a few matters in keeping with making Honiara the modern city one will expect international visitors and citizens alike to find in two years time.
A concerned member of the public wrote a letter to the Editor of a local newspaper which highlighted the ongoing concerns over rubbish disposal and littering.
I share the concerns and quote the letter in the hope littering can be ended and contribute to the clean city environment we would all like to see and Honiara become the modern city the government and the HCC are aiming to make it.

Work together and avoid littering
Dear Editor
I wish to write to you about the issues of throwing rubbish and the act of bad behavior which result in blocking of drainage and water runway which end up making lots of pools near the roads.
We as Solomon islanders we should be taking care of our towns and community to avoid littering. We must have a mindset and sense to do the right thing; we should throw rubbish at the right place.
To those who are always practicing that habit, I urge you to stop and those that help should talk to them. As I walk along the road in town ground, Kukum bus stop, point cruise I can see all the rubbish that is being dumped since last week, and that is how the drain are blocked causing flooding on our roads.
It’s sad to see others are trying to help clean up the town but some are careless and littering. We should have mercy and feel sorry for those people who try to clean up our town and we too should learn and follow the same practice to clean our town.
Finally, we need to help and stand by each other and work together, these things are not hard to do like use the rubbish bin, talk to those who are not listening and if you as a citizen I urge you to do the right thing, and show the best practice and keep our town clean.
