Permanent Secretary of the ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs Ethel Sigimanu has paid tribute to women who struggled to earn money through betel-nut and other means on the road side in Honiara.
She was speaking during the International Women’s day celebration in Honiara last week.
“Today, we also celebrate and acknowledge the many women who toil tirelessly day in and out to provide for their families,” Sigimanu said.
She added that they have sold betel-nut on road stalls, selling dyed lava lava to pay for their children’s school fees.
“Some of them bring in their food produces from their gardens, waving baskets and crafts to sell in the market.
“We remember you as you give a name and face to the purposes which underpin the reasons for our struggling for gender equality and human rights.”
