An undersea earthquake of magnitude 6.3 occurred at 3:17pm, approximately 20 km west of Auki, Malaita Province, Friday.
But it failed to generate a tsunami.
The Weather Office issued a statement minutes after the quake hit, saying there was no tsunami warning.
In Auki, Malaita, residents were on alert for a possible tsunami warning.
The earthquake sent shock waves through the township, but things returned to normalcy after people were assured of no tsunami warning.
Reports the Sunday Star received confirmed the whole province felt the earthquake.
In Honiara, those working quickly left their offices when it hit.
