ONE of the longest serving and highest ranking women in the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force is retiring today, after more than 33 years in the force.
Assistance Police Commissioner Gwen Ratu, 57, who joined the police force back in October 1984 will be formally retired on Friday.
Police Commissioner Matthew Varley said it is important to know that Ms Ratu has become a highest ranking woman officer in the RSIPF.
“I understand she is one of only two women who have made it through to Assistance Commissioner Ranks, which is a very proud achievement for Gwen,” Mr Varley said.
“On behalf of RSIPF and people of Solomon Islands, we thanked her for her dedication and commitment and 33 years of diligence service to the country.
“… and we wish her well.”
Mr Varley said Ms Ratu was recruited back in October 1984 and understands that she was one of three women in her class at that time.
“… and across her career has served in most departments of the RSIPF.
“She will retire as of tomorrow.
“It is also important to know she has become a highest ranking women police officer in the RSIPF.
“She leaves the service with honour and with dignity and will retire with much pride,” he added.
Ms Ratu has served the force for 33 years and eight months.
“We understand she will go into retirement and enjoy much deserved time with her family and grand children.
“I am sure she will have many other years of prosperity.
“As I have said to her this morning, she will be remembered fondly here in RSIPF and will always be her friend.
The RSIPF has mounted a farewell final parade for Ms Ratu yesterday in recognition of her dedicated service to the RSIPF and the people of Solomon Islands.
