REACH Consultancy this week has provided live-saving assistance to the Adaliua Piggery Farm in Central Kwara’ae in Malaita Province.
Since the switch of diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China in 2019, the Adaliua Farm asset was transferred from the Taiwan Technical Mission to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL). However, the farm received minimal support from the ministry for the past four years.
The lack of support has resulted in a situation where internal and external parasites affect the population of pigs on the farm which if untreated would cause deaths.
Upon request from Chief MAL extension Officer in Auki, Reach Consultancy responded positively by treating pigs on the farm on Monday with the required drugs.
According to the Reach Consultancy Director, Fredrick Fa’abasua, “Since the diplomatic switch, the operation of the farm was scaled down with minimal support from the MAL although it proved to be a very important asset for piggery farmers in Malaita Province, where most of the high-yielding pigs are raised and sold to local farmers.”
“This week on Monday 23 January 2023, the Chief MAL extension Officer in Auki who is tasked by MAL to manage the farm sought assistance from Reach Consultancy for the important drug that is required to treat all live pigs on the farm.
“The situation with internal and external parasites affecting the population of the pigs on the farm are quite serious that if not treated, pigs will die.”
“In response to this request, the Reach Consultancy decided to step in and assist the farm with the required drug for free,” Mr Fa’abasua said.
The Director of Reach Consultancy and his livestock Officer, Rex Ramoiau, had to go in and administer the drugs with the help of the MAL Officer looking after the farm.
Mal officer looking after the farm, Eluda, thanked Reach Consultancy for providing the important drugs for free and allowing its staff to carry out the vaccination at no cost.
According to the MAL officer, “This was the first time for Adailiu Farm to again have access for this important drug since the farm was handed over to MAL.
“It is a gift that this drug was made available to Adailiu Farm at no cost and it was a true blessing as it will surely save all animals on the farm,” he added.
Mr Eluda said the Adailiu Piggery Farm will now work closely with Reach Consultancy for the provision of some of the important drugs that will be needed by the farm in the future.
