A RESEARCH on the growth and reproduction of beche-de-mer is currently underway in the country.
The Ministry of Fisheries & Marine Resources (MFMR) has told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
Permanent Secretary (PS) Dr Christian Ramofafia said, that they are conducting a research to learn more about the growth of sea cucumber, so that right policies and regulations are put in place to manage well the utilisation of beche-de-mer.
“We are still researching to study how quick they grow as we already hatch 300 in the last two months and being grown in the communities, which would take us six to seven years before we realise,” the PS stated.
“Once we find out that the species that is fast to grow then we would not fight over beche-de-mer,” PS further stated.
