REVEREND David Tiva Kapu of the Anglican Church of Melanesia has taken his oath of office and allegiance as the country’s new Governor General before Chief Justice Sir Albert Rocky Palmer during the 46th Independence Anniversary celebration at the National Stadium in Honiara, Monday.
Reverend Kapu who comes from the Central Islands Province was elected by the National Parliament of Solomon Islands on Monday 17June.
His appointment as the representative of the Head of State of Solomon Islands His Majesty the King Charles III is in accordance to Section 27, Subsections 1 of the Solomon Islands Constitution.
Governor General Reverend Kapu’s five-year tenure commenced upon his swearing-in yesterday.
Attorney General John Muria Jr read out the Royal Commission of Appointment from His Majesty King Charles III in front of Chief Justice Sir Albert Palmer during the swearing-in ceremony.
After taking his oaths, the Governor General inspected the Guard of Honour.
Reverend Kapu is the eighth Governor General of Solomon Islands since independence. Some of his predecessors served a two-year term, whilst others served only one.
Upon his knighthood by King Charles III at the Buckingham Palace, he will be accorded the knighthood title of ‘Sir.’
